History and Culture

Jiangbei district has a rich historical and cultural heritage and bustling and colorful urban civilization. The Yaojiang River that gave birth to 7000 Hemudu Site Civilization flows softly along the district, and awards the district a thick of historical sedimentation. Other civilizations witness the long history of Jiangbei district include Fujiashan Site civilization, Juzhang Ancient City Ruins, Banmudu Ancient Light, and Yunhu Ancient Kiln Site.
Because of the 7,000 years’ civilization history, 2,500 years’ city history, 1200 years’ county history, more than 160 years’ trading history, and 25 years’ region history, Jiangbei district is nourished by filial and piety culture, bund culture, college culture, and Confucian entrepreneurs culture. At the same time, Ningbo University, Ningbo Grand Theater, Ningbo City Exhibition Hall, Ningbo Museum of Art and other cultural facilities are also located in this district, and can greatly facilitate the building of a vibrant cultural region.

 
Cicheng Ancient Town

Cicheng, a millennium town, is a China’s famous historical and cultural town and the kind Filial Piety Culture Village of China. It preserves completely traditional Chinese ‘pair checkerboard’ town pattern, and is known as a specimen of ancient Chinese county. Cicheng is ‘the first ancient county in the regions south of Yangtze River’. Within the county, there are a large number of historical sites. Among them, 33 sites are relic protection units of national, provincial, municipal or district level. Cicheng as a whole is a place for leisure and tourism.
Cicheng is also a fertile ground for outstanding people. From Tang and Song dynasty to Ming and Qing dynasty, it in total cultivated 5 Number One Scholar (Zhuangyuan) and 519 presented scholar (Jinshi), and is therefore honored as ‘Top One in the World Jinshi Town’. In modern times, financial magnate Qin Runqing, physical grandmaster He Yujie, Beijing Opera artist Zhou Xinfang, geneticist Tan Jiazhen, and famous writer Feng jicai were all born in Cicheng. The town deeply embeds its culture in ‘county government, filial & piety culture, imperial exams, and geomantic omen’ and obtains a unique charm. In 2008, Cicheng was appraised as China's first ‘The kind Filial Piety Culture Village’.
The Confucian Temple:The Confucian Temple at Cicheng, national key conservation units, is 318 years older than The Confucian Temple in Beijing. It is the only one official education institute completely protected in the eastern part of Zhejiang province. The Temple incarnates ‘neutralization-is-beautiful’ standard advocated by traditional Chinese Confucian culture.
Ancient County Government:Ancient County Government is a representative of ancient China’s county-level administrative culture. The Government was firstly built in A.D 738 (year 26th of Tang dynasty), and rebuilt in-situ according to the records of its original appearance in country history written in Qing dynasty. The vivid history and culture that the Government shows to visitors is a textbook for discovering China’s ancient county administration.
School Museum:School Museum, or examination tent, is a place for kids to attend imperial examination. It reflects the panoramic view of the ancient imperial examination system.
Taoist Temple of Qing Dynasty:Taoist Temple of Qing Dynasty is the most prestigious temple of Jiangsu and Zhejiang province. Founded in A.D. 749 (8th year of Tang Dynasty), the temple was rebuilt for further mining and showing the connotation of traditional Chinese Taoism.
Ci Lake:Ci Lake embodies the construction style of regions south of the Yangtze River – city in the front and garden in the rear. The Lake is beautiful in scenery and rich in legends.

Opening to the world in 1844, Ningbo Old Bund became one of China’s most important trading ports. It is the sailing basin of modern Ningbo merchants, the source of the Marine Silk Road, a joint that inland civilization changes to Ocean civilization, and witnesses the century-old history of Ningbo. Old Bund has China’s oldest bund building clusters. As the epitome of Ningbo history and culture, the Old Bund is regarded as the fifth Ningbo city business card.


Thousand-year-old Baoguo Temple

Baoguo Temple, the only incenseless temple in Zhejiang Province, is a national cultural relic site and national 4A tourist scenic spot, and is an important part of Marine Silk Road started from Ningbo. The Mahavira Palace (Daoxiong Baodian) is the oldest and best-preserved wooden structure in south Yangtze River region and is invaluable to the nation's architectural studies. The Temple is also known as ‘no-beam temple’ because its beams are hidden by ceilings and sunk panel. A more spectacular thing is that there is no birds nestle, spider webs, damage by worms, or even dirt within the hall.

‘Three-river Cultural Corridor’ is the name card of Jiangbei District. Alongside the corridor are famous scenery spots, such as century-old Ningbo Bund, Ningbo Grand Theatre, Ningbo Art Gallery, Ningbo City Exhibition Hall and Sun Lake Park. The corridor as a unique place connects classical with modern, east and west, traditional and opening.
All in all, a modern, cultural, energetic and ecological Jiangbei District has entered a new era for tourism development. Welcome friends at home and abroad to Ningbo Jiangbei for sightseeing, leisure and travel. 

Saturday Let’s meet in Laowaitan (Old Bund) subject series activity: Brief Introduction

   

‘Saturday let’s meet in Laowaitan subject series activities’ is sponsored and organized by Bund Management Committee, Jiangbei district. Series activities use culture to set up the stage and the economy to put on a show on weekly base. From Jan. 2009 to June 2012, 221 various shows have been performed. Roughly, 550,000 audiences (among which 110,000 were foreigners) and less than 500 companies attended these activities. In 2012 only, more than 30 shows were organized and less than 100,000 audiences enjoyed the performance. All these activities as a whole contribute greatly to the enhancement of Old Bund’s image and fame. Nowadays, Old Bund has become a new city cultural card. 

China Filial Piety Culture Festival: Brief Introduction
Filial piety culture has a long history in China. The millennium town, Cicheng, is the village of kind filial piety culture that passes on Chinese filial piety culture. Amiable parents and filial sons, kind and respectful brothers are the essence of traditional Chinese culture. These relationships set up the foundation of harmonious family and social.
In 2009, ‘The First China Filial Piety Culture Festival’ was jointly organized by China Ethics Association, China Folk Literature and Art Association, Jiangbei District Government, CCTV, Guangxi Satellite TV, and more than 600 newspapers and online media. During the following six months, more than 600 media and 8 million people attended a series of activities. The successful organization of this event left positive impact on promoting and advocating China’s filial piety culture. The event becomes an annual event afterwards.
